Systems Engineering

An interdisciplinary approach to designing, integrating, and managing complex systems across their lifecycle.

Definition

Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach to designing, integrating, and managing complex systems across their full lifecycle — from requirements definition through architecture, integration, verification, and operation. It exists because complex industrial systems fail at their interfaces and boundaries as often as within any single component, and no single engineering discipline owns the full picture of how a system's parts interact.

Requirements, Architecture, and System Boundaries

A systems-engineering approach starts by defining what a system must do — its requirements — before deciding how it will do it. From there, system architecture establishes the logical and physical structure: what the major subsystems are, how they interface, and where the system boundary sits relative to the systems around it.

Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) formalizes this into an executable model rather than a static document set, so requirements, architecture, and verification stay traceable to one another as a system evolves.

Why This Matters for Industrial Assets

For industrial assets, systems-engineering discipline is what keeps a reliability model, a cost model, and an operational model describing the same system boundary — preventing the common failure where three teams analyze "the plant" but silently assume three different scopes, producing numbers that cannot be reconciled.

How This Connects to Knar Global's Work

Systems-engineering discipline underlies how Knar Global defines the boundary of an Industrial Digital Asset before building reliability, cost, or risk models on top of it. A model is only decision-grade if the system boundary, interfaces, and requirements it represents are explicit and traceable — that groundwork is what systems engineering provides.
